THE HISTORY OF OUR ROOMS

The common thread of our rooms is a strong link to the building’s history and Matera’s tradition. A line of continuity that tells, through our rooms, the intense nuances of Matera’s territory.

BRAZIER ROOM

Let the sun in.

Overlooking the Murgia Park, this room is built entirely of limestone tufa. In the walls, you can see the marine sediments and shells which have embedded themselves into the stone thousands of years ago.

Furnished with all comforts, it enjoys, like all the other rooms, an extraordinary view overlooking the Gravina

Why call it the Brazier Room?

In the tannery, after the leather had undergone its various processing phases, the skins were left to dry using horizontal iron boards on which were hung with hooks. To facilitate drying, braziers were used as a heat source.

FIRE ROOM

The cave room.

In the cave room, the leather skins were cured and dyed, everything is magical.

This room was excavated from the rock and today, it is a place of relaxation and wonder. Here, you can live in the building’s history.

Why call it the Fire Room?

When processing leather, boiling water was essential. There was a large kitchen built with refractory bricks, which was fuelled by wood. Inside the kitchen was a large copper pot which was used to boil the water. The walls of this cave were completely blackened by soot and even today these signs are still visible.

THE SKIN ROOM

A shade of the sky at dawn.

You can admire the sky thanks to the private terrace reserved exclusively for this room. There is also a larger shared terrace which you can access from a door inside the room.

Why call it the Skin Room?

We are in the classic “attic” with a wooden roof, which served as a warehouse for the finished leather. The extensive terrace was used in the summer for drying the skins which were hung on iron wires supported by wooden forks.

THE WATER ROOM

The fiery sky of the sunset and the flowers which, dots in a sea of green, gray and brown, stand out unmistakably.

This room overlooks the ravine and the garden, filled with of many colours will produce profound tranquility in you.

Why call it the Water Room?

This partially unused area of the Tannery was hidden. Naturally, the tannery required water and there was a rainwater collection system used in the washing and dyeing processes of the leather. The water has magically left its colour and designs on the walls which are still present today – the past leaving an indelible sign of its presence.

THE ROOM OF THE TWO MILLSTONES

The chromatic scale of the Matera land.

You encounter the tones of the earth, of the wheat fields, of the burnt stubble.

Why call it the Room of the Two Millstones?

During the building’s renovation, two large stone millstones were found buried under the floor due to their heaviness. Before being a tannery, the building was used as an oil mill producing olive oil for the city. One of the two wheels was recovered and placed outside the room, the other was left where it was found – in memory of the place that has hosted it for so many centuries.

THE KNIFE ROOM

That white that blends with brown and green, the basis for a synergy of colors that gives Matera its unique look.

Why is it called the Knife Room?

During the leather processing phases, special knives were used to remove the remaining meat and fat that were still present on the hides. The hair removal from the leather took place on convex wooden surfaces with knives of the same shape. In this room, during the renovation, two workstations were found with their knives as well as a knife sharpener.
